Description
Gatton House is a house built in 1809. It is constructed of white brick with a slate roof. The house is two storeys high, with six bays. A Doric porch is located on the left side, containing a 20th-century door beneath a patterned overlight. On the ground floor, there are three tripartite French windows with glazing bars, each under a cambered arch, along with a small canted oriel window and one casement. The first floor features a band and pilaster strips on bays two and five. The first floor windows are tripartite with glazing bars and painted sills. The remaining windows are four-pane horned sashes in reveals with painted sills. The roof is hipped. A rendered stack rises through the eaves to the left of the entrance, and there are two further corniced stacks. In a letter dated June 26, 1809, John Constable’s mother described the house as a “great improvement to the entrance of our pretty village.” The interior has not been inspected.
