Description

The Elms is a large, fine red brick house dating from the 18th century, situated in Long Melford. It is a building of group value. The main body of the house is two storeys and has attics, with a five-window front on the upper storey and a six-window front on the ground storey. A later two-storey extension, of lower height, adjoins the north side and has a two-window front. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, set within flush cased frames. The central window on the upper storey is Palladian, featuring arched glazing bars in the upper light. The central entrance is a six-panel door with a semi-circular fanlight, framed by a Roman Doric doorcase with deep reveals, plain columns, and an open dentilled pediment. The fanlight’s arch is topped with a keystone carved with a head. The roof is tiled, with three flat-headed dormers visible from the front. A modern addition exists at the rear.
