Description

The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located in Kettlebaston. This flint and stone church features a nave that originates from the Norman period, but it primarily showcases details from the 14th century. The west tower, dating from the 14th century, includes diagonal buttresses and a castellated parapet, with tiled roofs. The south doorway is a late Norman feature, complete with shafts and scalloped capitals. The chancel also dates from the 14th century. The east window, added in 1902, likely replaces an original window and has ogee tracery similar to that found in the bell openings of the west tower. Inside, there is a square Norman font, an ogee arched tomb recess in the north wall, and remnants of 13th-century wall paintings. Notably, some fine alabaster panels were discovered embedded in the walls during the 19th century and are now housed in the British Museum. The church is recognized for its architectural and historical significance.
