Description

Morley Old Hall is a house dating to around 1600. It is constructed of brick in English bond, with plaintiled roofs, and follows a “U” plan. The house is two storeys high, with a further two storeys of attics. It features four bays of brick windows with ovolo mouldings, mullions, and transoms, which have been considerably renewed and are topped with ogee-moulded pediments. There are two dormers with crow-stepped gables, each containing a three-light mullioned and transomed window with a pediment and a single circular window (oculus) above, also with a pediment. A moulded brick cornice runs along the top, and the main gables are crow-stepped. A large external brick stack is located to the rear, featuring two polygonal shafts. An external stack on the south side incorporates a garderobe projection and also has two polygonal shafts. The original staircase has six ramps and solid hardwood treads. The roof displays an interesting structure, with principal rafters connected to the tie beams by elbowed wall-posts, because the attic floor is well below the level of the wall-plate. The site is surrounded by a moat.
