Description

Ilex House is a house dating from around 1780, with an extension to the east built in 1793. It is a two-story building with five recessed sash windows, each featuring glazing bars and slightly cambered heads. A shaped eaves cornice is supported by brackets, and the roof is covered in slate. The house is constructed of brick, which has been limewashed. A horizontal floor band runs around the facade. The front of the house features pilasters, and a slight projection provides the entrance, which has a six-panel door, an “umbrella” pattern fanlight, and panelled reveals. A wooden Doric porch, with slender columns, shelters the entrance. Inside, a wooden mantelpiece is adorned with fluted Doric columns. Local tradition suggests the brick used in the house’s construction is of the same type as that used at Holkham Hall.
