Description
A terrace of four villas, numbered 1-4 and 4a, built around 1879 in the cottage orné style, likely by the architect David Brandon. The villas were constructed for John and Margaret Bond Cabbell, following additions to Cromer Hall, and named after their London residence, 1 Chesterfield Gardens.
The construction is of flint, using both Quaternary and Quarry flint, with dressings of Lincolnshire Limestone ashlar. Brick chimney stacks rise from the roofs, which are covered in plain tiles. A central first-floor section features close-studded half-timbering. The terrace has a plan form with gabled cross wings at each end; the wing on the left hand side is paired. Windows are casement lights set within Gothic arched openings, featuring brick herringbone spandrels. The left-hand gable includes a circular attic oculus and large, twin ashlar kneelers below the bargeboard, a detail repeated on the right-hand gable. The close-studded section has twin half dormers supported by brackets, with shaped bargeboards and openwork timber finials. There are three large composite chimney stacks, plus a smaller one to the west. Two of the large stacks feature four Tudor chimneys of shaped bricks, connected at their heads by terracotta crockets.
The front gardens are enclosed by walls built in a similar style to Chesterfield Lodge.
