Description

The Very Heavy Bomber Control Tower is a Grade II listed building constructed from brick, concrete, and steel. It features a rectangular plan designed according to the Ministry of Defence standard design (294/45).

The exterior comprises a three-storey control tower topped by a glazed Visual Control Room (VCR) made of steel. The original crittall casement windows remain in their unaltered openings throughout the building. The east elevation, which faces the runway, includes a balcony with a metal balustrade on the second floor that wraps around both the north and south elevations. The VCR is situated above, surrounded by a metal balustrade at the parapet. Attached to the south is the original fire station, which has blocked openings, along with a night flying equipment store. Additionally, a later 20th-century five-bay fire station is connected on the airfield side. Other structures related to the control tower include a station square to the east, though the lettering is no longer visible, and a meteorological enclosure to the south-east.

Inside, the main entrance is located at the rear, leading to a small lobby that provides access to ground-floor rooms and a staircase with a metal balustrade. The interior layout largely remains unchanged and adheres to the prescribed design, although some modern stud partitions have been added on the second floor without removing the original features. Noteworthy equipment still in place includes a Pneumatic Lamsom tube plant, a vacuum pump and pipe system for message delivery, as well as the telephone exchange gear on the ground floor. The airfield lighting control desk and the Controller's desk in the VCR are also intact. Access to the VCR is via the original ladder, which remains in place but requires maintenance.
