Description
The John Lewis Warehouse is a warehouse built in 1963, designed by Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall in collaboration with the engineer Felix Candela. The structure is made of reinforced concrete with a board-marked finish, and includes some brick elements. It has a rectangular shape and features a distinctive roof composed of linked, inverted pyramids. Each pyramid is supported at its apex by a square concrete pier and is inclined upward on the north side to allow natural light to enter, creating a serrated roof profile. The southeastern end has open bays for loading, showcasing the unpainted board-marked concrete undersides of the vaults, while the remaining bays are enclosed with grey brick and large loading doors. Inside, the vaults are exposed but painted. The warehouse is notable for its impressive shell concrete roof design.
