Description

The Mill Farm is a house built between 1828 and 1832 for Mr. Brown Collison as a miller's house, associated with a windmill that was later demolished around 1870. The house is constructed of buff brick, with a red brick extension to the East, and has slate roofs, mostly hipped.

The house is a small, stripped-down Neo-classical design, originally facing south. It comprises a single-storey main block, a small pitched-roof East block fronting the road, and a single-storey East wing extending to the rear, all in a similar style. The south front is symmetrical, with a gabled central projection that has a verge overhang suggesting a pediment. Paired pilasters are present at all corners. There is one window to each side of the central projection and a central entrance. The brickwork features fine, gauged arches.

The East block is set back on the right-hand side, with a central projection on the south side, featuring a window below overhanging eaves. Internal chimneys are formed from two separate square shafts with caps, linked above and echoing the paired pilasters.

The east end has a wide projecting verge supported by three shaped brackets. Paired pilasters, linked at base and head, support a semi-circular arch with a key-block above a recess containing a flat gauged arch over a two-light window with an apron below, and a two-light flush cast iron lattice casement.

A square projection sits in the north-east corner of the rear elevation, featuring margin-light casement windows on each side and a parapet to the roof. The entrance is now located within a single-storey extension with matching paired pilasters on overhanging eaves, supporting a hipped roof.
