Description
This is a 15th-century building, originally a range of cottages, situated at Piccott’s End. The structure is timber-framed and incorporates whitewashed plaster and red brick, with old tiled roofs. It is two storeys high and features five gables, with casement windows. At No. 132, a crown post roof of three trusses is visible, and this property contains exceptionally important late 15th-century wall paintings discovered in March 1953 on the north-west side wall. The paintings depict religious themes arranged in a manner similar to an ikonostasis, including scenes of Baptism, Christ in Majesty, and various Saints. No. 134 is recorded as containing later 16th-century wall paintings. A plaque on the front wall commemorates Sir Astley Cooper, surgeon to King George IV and senior surgeon at Guy's Hospital (1800-1825), who opened the First Cottage Hospital in one of the cottages in January 1827.
