Description
Weffells is a house dating from the mid-16th century, originally timber-framed and later rendered with pargetted plaster, featuring gabled peg tile roofs. The house is two storeys throughout and includes a gabled cross wing on the south side with a jetty. A ridge chimney stack rises over the main "hall" block, and a smaller stack is located against the south flank of the cross wing. The windows are small-paned casements from the 20th century, and the cross wing has 19th-century bargeboards. Weffells represents a late example of a small two-bay "open hall" with a later inserted floor and a parlour/solar cross wing. The roofs are constructed with one side purlins, clasped purlins, wind bracings, and soot-blackened rafters, displaying a raised arch-braced collar roof over the hall. The wall bracing is serpentine, notably thick, and interrupts the studwork. An external door opening at first floor likely provided access to a former garderobe at the rear. One original ovolo mullioned window remains on the south flank. The cross wing was formerly jettied at the rear.
