Description
The barn at Faulkner's Hall, known as the Top Barn, is an important early medieval structure that has been adapted over time. It is a timber-framed building arranged in an L shape due to ancient additions. The barn features gable end roofs made of corrugated iron and walls clad in weatherboard. A gabled midstrey has been added to the east side, complete with large doors for access.
Inside, the original structure includes six main posts from an aisled hall, which have carved oak capitals with carinate filets beneath the abacus, characteristic of Norman design. The posts still have their timber sole pads beneath the current floor level, and some are trenched for passing braces. Other early features include remnants of reversed assembly and tap joints that are no longer in their original positions. The barn likely underwent alterations for its current use in the late 15th century or early 16th century, when the timber frame of the west wing appears to have been added.
