Description

The Cottage is a house that dates from the late 17th century to the 18th century, with some 20th-century alterations. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, topped with a peg-tiled mansard roof, and has one and a half storeys. The front features a three-window range, including one 20th-century casement window, one sash window, and another sash window that has been converted to a top-hung casement. All windows have glazing bars and 3x3 panes, with the sashes lacking horns. The original sash windows had a lower moving frame of double pane depth and an upper fixed frame of single pane depth. The west-facing door is a 20th-century design, glazed with glazing bars and 2x3 panes. There are two dormers with deep peg-tiled hips and 20th-century casement windows. A central stack is present, and the red weatherboarding suggests the location of a door when the property was originally two cottages.

Inside, the cottage features exposed ceiling joists that show rudimentary workmanship, along with two possible stair traps located at the front next to the stack. Iron ties have been added to prevent further bowing of the front wall, which occurred after the removal of tie-beams to improve access when the three-celled building was divided into two cottages. At the rear, there is a 20th-century brick extension with a flat felted roof and wooden casement windows, including a fully glazed central door and a 20th-century casement window at the west end of the rear of the original structure.
