Description

The building is a county court house, dating from approximately 1840. It is constructed of gault brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco and stone dressings, and a slate roof. The main block is aligned roughly northeast to southwest, and is two stories in height, largely comprising a high single-story courtroom. Axial stacks are located at each end, with an additional stack on the northwest elevation. Two single-story annexes flank each long elevation, and a single-story vestibule extends across the entire northeast elevation, facing New Road. A 20th-century single-story lean-to extension is situated at the southwest end.

The front elevation features three original four-light sash windows with moulded surrounds, consoles beneath, semicircular heads with projecting keys, and pilasters with moulded bases and capitals – all in stucco. Two original four-panel doors are present with plain overlights, matching pilasters, and segmental arches with projecting keys. The building has a moulded plinth and four rusticated pilasters, with a moulded stone cornice resting on paired stucco consoles. The words "Brentwood County Court" are embossed on the frieze, and above the center of the front elevation are painted and gilt royal arms. A circular recess is set into the front gable. The low-pitched roof has parapet gables with plain stone copings. Each axial stack is topped with a moulded stone cornice. The sides of the main block have three pairs of four-light sash windows with semicircular brick arches. The upper part of the rear gable and stack were rebuilt in the 20th century. The rear elevation of the right rear annex, which serves as the judge's retiring room, has one original sash window with six and six lights inside a flat brick arch. This annex has its own hipped roof. The rear of the left front annex has been altered, featuring a half-glazed door and a blocked original aperture above with a flat brick arch. A later lean-to extension is attached to the left rear annex.

The courtroom interior has been altered by the insertion of a partition at the northeast end, impacting some original internal features now found in the solicitors' and counsels' lobby. The windows are fitted with pilasters, capitals, and arches of moulded plaster. A moulded arch is above the door to the judge's retiring room. The interior also features a moulded cornice immediately below the window sills, and a moulded ceiling cornice. There are two transverse beams and two longitudinal beams, all plastered. A moulded wooden canopy is supported by cast-iron scrolled brackets above the judge's seat. The judge’s retiring room has a similar ceiling cornice. Original internal wall surfaces have a recessed boarded moulding approximately one meter above the ground floor.
