Description

The barn at Wynbarns Farm is a Grade II listed structure dating from the 16th century, with extensions added in the 17th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame, is weatherboarded, and has a roof covered with machine-made red clay tiles. The barn consists of five bays oriented northeast to southwest, with a 17th-century midstrey located to the northwest of the middle bay. There are lean-to extensions from the 18th and 19th centuries in the northern angle, creating a catslide roof with the main structure. Additionally, there are two 19th-century lean-to extensions along the remainder of the northwest side, all of which share similar roofing tiles. The midstrey has large double doors that are in poor condition, and there are smaller double doors from the 19th or early 20th century to the southeast of the threshing bay. A high loading door is situated in the northeast gable end.

Inside, the barn features jowled posts and arched braces that are trenched outside the heavy studding, with inserted straight braces inside. There are arched braces supporting the tie-beams, some of which have been replaced, along with additional 19th-century bolted handing knees. The wallplates display edge-halved and bridled scarfs, and the wallplate over the midstrey is butt-jointed above the adjacent bay posts. The interior also contains some extra posts and tie-beams at irregular intervals, with one original tie-beam in the southwest part reported missing, though it was concealed by hay bales during an inspection in August 1989. The roof is a clasped purlin design with vertical queen struts, and it was retiled around 1946 following damage from the war.
