Description

Rede Cottage is a late 17th or early 18th century cottage located in Earls Colne. It is timber framed with rendered and washed walls and a thatched roof. The cottage originally comprised two rooms and an attic, with a central hearth.

The front of the cottage has a gabled porch on the left side of the centre, featuring exposed brick at the bottom and a 20th-century battened door. To the right is a three-light 20th-century casement window and to the left a two-light casement. A ridge stack is positioned to the right of the centre, built with 20th-century bricks. The south-west gable has a single-light and a two-light casement window on the ground floor, and a single-light window in the attic. A flat-roofed 20th-century extension with a two-light casement is located to the right. A projecting flat-roofed 20th-century extension is situated on the northwest gable at ground floor level. The rear elevation features a single-light window to the right of the centre.

Inside, the cottage displays jowled corner posts and close-studded walls with passing braces. There is no staircase to the attic. Evidence of blocked windows can be seen on the rear of the building. The cottage has been extended at ground floor level, but the timber frame remains largely intact with minimal disturbance, and window insertions have also been kept to a minimum. The rarity of this level of survival is particularly notable in this region.
