Description

The Vicarage, built in 1887, was designed by William White (1825-1900). It is a finely preserved example of his late architectural style and is considered to be of group value. The building is constructed of red brick with rubbed and moulded brick dressings, tile hung gables, red plain tile roofs with deep eaves, and plain wooden barge boards. It is two storeys high with attics and a cellar, set on a brick plinth. The plan is rectangular, with gables, and includes service rooms and a yard to the north and east.

The main entrance, facing north, features a two-centred chamfer-moulded-arched doorway with a panelled, half-glazed door and side lights. The west facade has an attic gable to the right and a smaller gable to the left, incorporating four-light casement windows and a small triangular attic window. To the left of the facade are three-light casement windows at ground and first floor levels within chamfer-moulded segmental brick arches. A bay window is located on the ground floor to the right, featuring a tiled, hipped roof and transomed casements.

The interior retains numerous original features, including a large wooden dog-leg staircase with chamfered square balusters and square newels with moulded caps, illuminated by a Gothic stained glass window. Exposed chamfered floor joists are visible, alongside fielded pine boarding to service doors and walls. Main rooms are accessed via four-panelled doors. Original wooden fire surrounds remain throughout, with tiled or brick inner faces, and original plaster coving is also present. The door and window furniture was specially designed. Original plans and specifications are held at the Diocesan Office in Ely.
