Description
The Airmen Pilots' Block, also known as Building 11, is a significant structure built in 1933 and extended in 1935 by the Air Ministry's Directorate of Works and Buildings. It features cavity brickwork in stretcher bond and slate roofs. The building has a rectangular plan with an L-shaped extension added to the west end. It is a single-storey L-plan building with the main entrance located on the south side, leading into a long wing that extends to the left and a service wing at the rear.
The exterior is characterized by steel casement windows with small panes and steel transoms. The front facade is asymmetrical, featuring three 2-light windows with transoms on the left and two on the right, alongside plank doors framed by a plain brick pilaster surround that is set forward by half a brick. The short right return has a centrally located small plank door with an overlight, while the long left return has three 2-light casements flanked by single lights at each end, all set to concrete sills and positioned tight to the eaves. The roof is a lofty hipped design, entirely plain with no stacks or ventilators.
Inside, the building retains its original doors and joinery. Historically, this block is representative of the architectural style during the expansion of the Royal Air Force under Trenchard after 1923. It is part of a significant group of buildings at Duxford, which is noted for being one of the best-preserved examples of a fighter base in Britain up to 1945. The site has important historical connections to the Battle of Britain and the American fighter support for the Eighth Air Force. For further historical context, additional details can be found under the entry for the Officers' Mess (Building 45).
