Description

The Manor House is a late 18th-century house located on Station Road in Wisbech St. Mary. It was built in 1791, as indicated by the wrought iron initials "T.W." and the date displayed on the north and south gable ends. The house is constructed primarily of red brick, with paler brick used for the front wall, and displays English bond on the rear. The roof is covered with Collyweston stone slates with parapetted gable ends, incorporating end stacks.

The house is arranged in a T-shaped plan, with two storeys and attics, accentuated by a band at eaves height and three dormers. The front facade features stone sills and cambered arches over a range of five recessed sash windows, each containing twelve panes. A broken pediment tops the central round-headed doorway, flanked by plain pilasters and an entablature. The arch incorporates a small raised key block sculpted with a mask head ornament. The door itself is panelled, consisting of four raised and fielded panels and two flush panels, and is topped by a round-headed fanlight with Gothick glazing bars.

Curving forecourt walls with pilaster buttresses adjoin the house on either side.

Inside, the butler's pantry retains original cupboards flanking the fireplace, with panels featuring ogee shaped heads. The kitchen also contains original cupboards, some utilising butterfly hinges, while others exhibit raised and fielded panelling. A fine staircase, spanning four flights and two landings, is distinguished by its open string, three balusters per tread (except for the attic flight, which has two), a moulded and raked handrail, and square, panelled newels.
