Description

The Five Bells is an 18th-century inn, with assembly rooms added in the early 19th century, located on the east side of High Street, Burwell. It is constructed of painted local brick and white gault brick, with a plain tile roof, parapet gables, and original end stacks featuring red brick patterning. The assembly rooms have a slated hipped roof. The building is two storeys and attics, with a symmetrical three-bay facade. A sawtooth eaves cornice runs along the roofline. Three casement dormer windows are visible in the roof, each with a segmental shaped leaded roof. The first floor has three windows, each a twelve-pane, near-flush frame hung sash window set within a segmental arch, though the original window height has been reduced. Below, two similar windows flank a six-panelled 19th-century door, which has a moulded doorcase with a projecting cornice supported by carved brackets.
