Description
The Church of St James is a Grade II* listed building located in West Tilbury. It dates from the late 11th century or early 12th century and has undergone alterations in the 14th century and in 1879. The structure is built of flint and ragstone rubble with limestone dressings, and the roofs are tiled. The 12th-century nave has been largely refaced in the 19th century, except for the south wall, which retains one 12th-century window with a rounded head and the remains of a 13th-century window. The chancel features a 19th-century east window, with 14th-century splays and a rear arch. The north wall includes a 14th-century window with a two-centred rear arch, which is not blocked, as well as a 19th-century window and part of a late 11th-century window above. The south wall has two 19th-century windows that incorporate some 14th-century detailing. The north vestry and porch were added in 1879, using much early material, and the west tower was also constructed in 1879. The church is one of the dominant landmarks of south Essex.
