Description
This is an early to mid-19th century garden ornament commissioned for the 3rd Lord Ongley at The Swiss Garden. The ornament consists of a white marble tablet carved to resemble an open book, set into a grey marble base. It is located approximately 40 metres southwest of Swiss Cottage, within close proximity to a thatched tree shelter. The tablet is inscribed with a poem, believed to be by Lord Ongley, entitled "The Forgotten One", which explores themes of memory, loss, and the passage of time. The poem references a shower in June, an oak tree, and a tomb, creating a poignant and evocative atmosphere. The inscription also includes references to remembrance and the impact of time on relationships. The poem concludes with a farewell and acceptance of forgetfulness.
