Description
Derwent Cottages is a row of houses dating to the 17th century, originally built as a parish workhouse and overseers’ house. The row initially comprised four houses, with a lower pair offset slightly. The latter two houses have since been converted into a single dwelling. The cottages are constructed from coursed limestone rubble, with remnants of old lime render visible. The roofs are covered with old clay tiles. The buildings have a gable end facing the road. While the rear (western) elevation features some 20th-century casement windows, the eastern elevation has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries, incorporating new windows and single-story lean-to extensions. Number 5 has four first-floor leaded casement windows. The ground floor windows are casements with glazing bars. The cottages are included on the list for their group value.
