Description
Pair of attached cottages at Stoulton Windmill Hill, probably dating from the 17th century and extended during the 20th century. They are built of timber frame with plaster and painted brick panels, beneath a thatched roof hipped on the left end, with brick axial and gable end stacks.
The plan follows a typical arrangement for a pair of cottages, each originally comprising a hall to the right with a fireplace and a smaller unheated service room to the left. Woodbine Cottage (on the left) has a single bay extension on its left side and a small 20th-century wing at the rear. Rosemary Cottage (on the right) has a large 20th-century extension at its right-hand end.
The exterior is one storey with attic accommodation. The asymmetrical south front displays five windows comprising various 20th-century casements, with attic casements set within two wide eyebrow dormers. Two 20th-century gabled porches serve the cottages. The eastern side shows a two-window 20th-century extension. At the rear (north) are further 20th-century casements, a smaller dormer in the thatch, a single-storey 20th-century wing on the right, and a 20th-century extension at the left end.
The interior of Rosemary Cottage retains significant original features. The right and left-hand rooms are now open to one another. The right-hand room contains a chamfered axial beam with run-out stops and unchamfered joists, together with a large brick fireplace featuring a chamfered timber lintel with an ogee stop at one end (the soffit is cut away) and a 19th-century oven with an iron door. The smaller left part has a roughly chamfered axial beam with later joists. The attic chambers contain large exposed purlins set on the back of principals of a partition truss. Some old plank doors survive. The interior of Woodbine Cottage was not inspected.
