Description

This is a terrace of five large houses built around 1820, located on London Road in Worcester. The houses are constructed of red brick with stone dressings, and have hipped slate roofs partially hidden by brick parapets. The roofline is punctuated by brick stacks with projecting details and decorative pots. Original timber and glass porches provide access. A set of slate garden steps with wrought and cast-iron handrail leads down to each house, and the house on the left retains an original cast-iron pedestrian gate.

The houses follow a double-depth plan. The end houses, numbers 79 and 87, are double-fronted, while the others are single-fronted. A central hallway runs through each house. Service ranges are located to the rear of the house on the left, with the exception of numbers 85 and 87, where they are located to the right. The houses are three stories high, with cellars and attics. The first floor features twelve windows, arranged in a pattern of 3:2:2:2:3. The stone detailing includes a first-floor sill band, sills, and wedge-shaped lintels over semi-circular arches. Unique windows are incorporated - the second window from the left has an oculus within an elaborate surround and a pediment. Most windows are 4/8 or 3/6 sashes, with radial glazing to the tympanum of the arch-headed windows. Several of the windows are blind. All windows are in plain reveals with sills. The porches, likely dating to the mid to late 19th century, have two slate steps leading to a five-panel door with triple beading and raised and fielded panels, embellished with a rectangular design. The upper panels of the door in the left-hand house are glazed, and the doorways are framed by fluted architraves and panelled reveals. Each house has a fanlight above the door, featuring various designs. The returns on the rear of the houses have tall parapets and windows with sashes and wedge lintels.

The interiors retain many original features, including staircases with wreathed handrails and square balusters, panelled doors, architraves, skirting boards, dado rails, and plaster cornices. Fireplaces remain in place, and some cellars retain cast-iron hob grates. Houses 79 and 87 both feature a distinctive semi-circular staircase with a wreathed handrail. A fire insurance plaque is visible on the right-hand house.
