Description

This is a 17th-century farmhouse with later alterations from the late 18th century, mid-19th century, and mid-20th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, set on a rubble base. Later brick refacing and replacement walling, along with plain tiled roofs, are also present. The original design comprised a hall range and a cross-wing. The hall range, originally three framed bays aligned north-east/south-west, has a substantial external chimney built with rubble and brick at its north-east end. The cross-wing adjoins the south-west end and was likely originally three framed bays wide. The two-story north-east front of the hall range features 19th-century casement windows. These include two 2-light ground floor windows with cambered heads, and a 3-light window and two square lights on the first floor. A 19th-century lean-to brick porch covers the central entrance, behind which is a ledged and battened door. The gable end of the cross-wing has a 2-light casement window on each floor, and a blocked attic light. A partly timber-framed lean-to outshut is situated in the angle between the hall range and cross-wing. This outshut includes a 2-light casement window and a doorway protected by a half-glazed porch. A single-storey wing is attached to the north-east end of the main house, encompassing the external chimney, and has a 2-light 19th-century casement window and a door facing outwards. The roof trusses in the hall range include stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and one roof truss at the north-west end indicates a raising of the roof at some point.
