Description
This is a terrace of shops with living accommodation above, built in two phases during the early 19th century and circa 1840. Numbers 67 to 70 were constructed in the early 19th century, followed by numbers 71 and 72 around 1840. The buildings are constructed of Flemish bond brick, with gabled plain tile roofs, concrete tiles to numbers 67 and 72, and brick ridge and end stacks. They have a double-depth plan and are three storeys high, originally featuring a six-window range.
Number 67 has a late 19th-century shop front with a bracketed architrave and plate-glass windows. The other shop fronts have been replaced in the 20th century. A semi-circular arched pedestrian entrance is between numbers 68 and 69. The first floor windows have gauged brick flat arches and retain early 19th-century sixteen-pane sashes to numbers 67 and 68; number 71 has a late 19th-century four-pane sash, and the others have 20th-century windows. The second floor 'topshop' windows also have flat brick arches above, with original 19th-century seven-light casements with horizontal glazing bars to numbers 67 and 68. A moulded wood cornice runs along the top of the building.
The rear elevation includes mid-to-late 19th-century extensions with slate roofs, segmental-arched two-light casements, and 19th-century seven-light casements with glazing bars to the 'topshop' windows.
The original ‘topshops’, purpose-built, well-lit workshops accessible by winder staircases from the first floor, survive within the building. These were likely used for weaving and ribbon-making.
