Description

Old Town Place comprises two houses, likely dating to circa 1690, though some sources suggest 1760. The houses are constructed of brick with ashlar and stucco dressings, and have a hipped tile roof with brick stacks at the rear. They are two storeys with an attic, arranged in a symmetrical 5-window facade, with a narrower central section projecting forward. The houses are of a double-depth plan and in a Georgian style. A top dentil cornice runs along the top of the facade. The round-headed entrance features fielded-panelled pilaster strips, unusual brackets to the cornice, and an archivolt with a key stone. Above the 6-fielded-panel door is a fanlight with thick glazing bars, and a lantern above. The windows have sills with painted brick aprons and rubbed brick flat arches with keys over 12-pane sashes, with horns on the first-floor windows. Three dormers are present, the central one having a 20th-century pediment replacing an earlier segmental pediment, each containing a 2-light casement window with small panes. The left return features a projecting section under a hipped roof, and there is a two-storey rear wing. The interior includes an open-well staircase with slender turned balusters. A single-storey, two-window wing with an attic to the right (No.4) features a top cornice and an entrance set within a brick projection, with a rubbed brick flat arch over a 4-flush-panel door. Windows have sills and rubbed brick flat arches over a tripartite 4:12:4-pane sash to the left and a 12-pane sash to the right, with two hipped dormers containing 2-light casement windows with small panes. A timber-framed gable and entrance are located at the rear. The building served as Town Offices until 1855 and functioned as a hotel for much of the 20th century.
