Description

Coton House is a late 18th-century house, possibly designed by Samuel Wyatt. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a slate and lead roof. The house is two storeys high with a five-window front, the central three windows projecting in a bowed form from ground to roof. The central bay features part-glazed French doors set within a surround of stone pilasters and an entablature. Flanking the French doors are fifteen-pane sashes, and further tripartite sashes with unfluted Ionic columns supporting the architraves. Segmental arches sit above the windows. The first floor has five twelve-pane sashes. A stone plinth supports the building, with recessed panels above the central doors and flanking sashes. A first-floor sill band runs along the facade, and a moulded stone eaves cornice tops the building. Inside, a large central staircase rises in a single flight, then returns over two further flights, and is fitted with an iron balustrade. The fireplaces are of alabaster, decorated with garlands and friezes.
