Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church with fabric dating from the late 12th/early 13th century, with 14th-century additions. It was largely rebuilt in the 17th century and restored by Lewis and Son of Newcastle-under-Lyme around 1870. The church is constructed of coursed sandstone to earlier parts, with ashlar for the 19th-century work, and has late 19th-century plain tiled roofs with fishscale bands and ornamental cresting.

The church comprises a nave and chancel in one space, a west tower, a continuous north aisle, a south porch, an organ chamber, and a vestry. The tower, likely mid-to-late 17th century, is in a Gothic Survival style. It has two stages on a double-chamfered plinth, with paired trefoil-headed openings in the belfry under triangular and heart-shaped lights to the north, south, and west. A blocked, chamfered rectangular opening is located below the belfry on the south. The tower has a plain embattled parapet and corner pinnacles. A wide stepped buttress is at the north-east angle. The nave has two bays and a chancel of one bay, with late 19th-century fenestration. A cusped 3-light window is located to the east of the porch, and a 4-light mullioned and transomed window, also with cusped lights, is found to the west. The east window has three cusped lights with elongated quatrefoils above. The gabled south porch is 17th century, featuring a roughly-shaped round-headed outer arch and a lancet window above. The south door is a transitional design from around 1200, with one order of shafts and an arch of one step and one slight chamfer, although much of the stonework was replaced around 1870. The north aisle, organ chamber, and vestry are under a continuous catslide roof, apparently late 19th century, with plain mullioned windows on the north side. A 17th-century window of two round arches under a square head is set into the west wall of the north aisle, and a nearby datestone reads 1614/1878.

Inside, a tall, narrow, pointed arch defines the tower entrance. The north nave arcade is of two pointed bays, with a central octagonal pier probably from the 14th century. The nave and chancel have a continuous arch-braced roof in five and a half bays (late 19th century). The fittings and furnishings are predominantly late 19th or later in date, with the exception of the late 12th-century font, which comprises a round basin on a circular moulded pedestal above a chamfered octagonal plinth. Stained glass from the 20th century is by Shrigley and Hunt. A monument in an arched recess on the north side of the chancel commemorates Sir John Bowyer (died 1604) and his wife, Catherine. It features a chest tomb with two recumbent effigies and armorial shields, along with a moulded inscription band.
