Description

This is a late 18th and early 19th century boundary stone situated on the north bank of Rising Brook, approximately 75 metres south east of Dutton’s Pool, near Rugeley. The stone, constructed of local stone, is rectangular with a rounded top. The south face displays some tool marks in the centre, and the stone is roughly hewn, especially on its broader south face. The broader faces are oriented towards and away from the stream.

The stone is one of a pair marking the boundary along the Rugeley and Horton parish border, which follows the course of Rising Brook. An embankment was created alongside the brook in 1809. The area, historically known as Slitting Mill and Stonehouse, was a centre for nail making, specifically involving mills and forges producing iron nails for ironworks in the Cannock Chase area. Iron bars were flattened and 'slit' into rods. The hamlet was in operation under Walter Chetwynd before 1646, with documented milling and forging continuing through the 18th and 19th centuries. Although the stones are not depicted on any historic or modern maps, they retain their original locations. The stone has group value with another surviving boundary stone located on the opposite bank of Rising Brook, which faces in a different direction.
