Description
Chatterley Whitfield is a former colliery fan house built around 1930. The building is constructed of red brick and features an asbestos cement roof with a low brick parapet at the gable ends. It has metal-framed windows throughout, with concrete lintels and sills.
The structure is a rectangular, single-storey building that includes an attached ventilation shaft on the west side. The gabled south elevation showcases a central pilaster and flanking pilasters that extend slightly above the gable, along with a brick eaves cornice. The ground floor has tall windows, while shorter windows are positioned above. The right side of the building is divided into four bays by pilasters, with paired half-glazed timber doors in bays one, three, and four, and a tall window in the second bay. The rear elevation features a timber door and metal-framed windows. A low brick building is attached to the north-west corner. The west elevation is similarly divided by pilasters and has windows in the two right-hand bays. The attached evaseé includes a moulded brick capping and decorative horizontal bands of brick on its south face.
The interior was not inspected in 2013, but it is noted that the fan has been removed. However, the concrete fan casings and mechanical piping between the fan shaft bearing glands remain. A small engine radiator used for cooling the fan is also still present. The ground floor has an inserted blockwork partition wall at the south end, and access to the mezzanine floor is provided by timber stairs. Additionally, there is an undercroft beneath part of the ground floor, and the roof is supported by lightweight steel trusses.
