Description
The Cleobury North War Memorial is a churchyard memorial dedicated in March 1920. It was designed by RB Dawson and carved by George Brown and Son. The memorial is made of Grinshill sandstone and limestone and features a cross with a tapered, octagonal shaft and arms, which rests on a moulded base with a stepped plinth.
The cross head is adorned with carved foliage at the junctions between the arms, which swell to a plain boss, and there is a moulded ring where the arms meet the shaft. The tapered shaft rises from a moulded foot and is supported by a stepped base. On the western side of the base, there is an inset limestone plaque inscribed with: ‘HERE AMID THE HALLOWED GRAVES / OF THEIR DEPARTED THE PEOPLE / OF CLEOBURY NORTH HAVE PLACED / THIS MEMORIAL TO THOSE WHO DIED / FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918’. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the topmost step of the plinth. On the eastern side, it reads: ‘BY THIS MEMORIAL THE PEOPLE / OF CLEOBURY NORTH ALSO / COMMEMORATE WITH PRIDE / AND GRATITUDE THEIR / FELLOW COUNTRYMEN WHO / FELL IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945’, with the names of the fallen inscribed on the upper step below. The other two sides of the memorial are blank.
