Description
Step House is a house dating from the early to mid-17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and early to mid-20th century. It has a timber frame with painted brick nogging, and a small section rebuilt in painted red sandstone, topped with a slate roof. The house features a baffle-entry plan consisting of three framed bays. The framing includes square panels that extend from the sole plate to the 17th-century wall plate, with short straight corner braces.
The building is two storeys high and has an off-centre brick ridge stack to the left, along with another brick stack behind the ridge, off-centre to the right. The front has three windows, likely early 20th-century two- and three-light leaded wooden casements, and two oriel windows on brackets on the first floor. There is probably an early 20th-century panelled door located between the first and second windows from the left, which is sheltered by a small gabled porch.
Inside, the house features exposed collar and tie-beam trusses in the gable ends, both with queen struts and V-struts. The rear includes a one-storey lean-to addition made of painted red sandstone and a 19th-century wing with an integral brick end stack. The interior has timber-framed cross walls and chamfered beams, along with a large open fireplace that has a chamfered wooden lintel. There is also a 17th-century oak winder staircase located at the rear, adjacent to the stack. It appears that the eaves have been raised at some point, likely during the 18th century.
