Description
The Glazeley War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St Bartholomew in Glazeley and was constructed around 1920. It is made of ashlar stone and features a square, tapered pier that rises from an octagonal plinth, which is set on a stepped platform topped with a ball finial.
The ball finial sits above a cube that crowns the square pier. The cube is adorned with egg and dart moulding at the top and roll moulding at the bottom. Each face of the cube has a raised border and raised lettering on all four sides, which reads ‘CHEER./FUL-/NESS’; ‘COUR./AGE’; ‘ENDUR./ANCE’; and ‘PROW./ESS’. The plinth has a moulded lip that overhangs at the top and a projecting band at the bottom. Each side of the plinth features rectangular panels with raised lettering. The panel on the northwestern (road) side states, ‘ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS / AS A MEMORIAL / OF THE GREAT WAR / AND TO PERPETUATE THE NAMES / OF THE GALLANT MEN FROM / THE GLAZELEY DISTRICT / WHO JOINED HIS MAJESTY’S FORCES / IN DEFENCE OF THEIR COUNTRY / 1914-1919’. The other three sides list the names of the fallen. The memorial stands on an octagonal platform with three steps.
