Description

A terrace of four units, now five shops with apartments above, was likely originally dwellings, dating from around 1500, with later modifications. The buildings are timber-framed with a plain tiled roof. They are mostly three storeys high, though the sloping site means that number 69, at the upper end of the row, has a shop front spanning the ground and first floors, topped by a wide gabled attic. There are eight windows across the façade. The shop fronts are largely from the late 19th or early 20th century, and a central arched entrance provides access to a rear passage. The timber framing has close studding and a partial mid rail in the upper storey, with two windows per unit. Number 65 retains sash windows, while the rest have shallow oriels inserted in the early 20th century, featuring wood mullions, transoms, and leaded lights. The second storey is jettied, but in numbers 65 to 69, the jetty is a cast-iron lintel, with mock-painted timberwork above suggesting significant restoration or rebuilding. Upper windows are slightly projecting mullioned casements of four lights, combined to form an eight-light window over number 68. Number 69 has Shaw-style oriel windows. Two gabled dormers are in the roof over numbers 66 and 67, and a wide jettied gable, possibly a 20th-century addition, is above number 69, with a five-light casement window and barge-boards with a finial. Various axial and rear wall stacks are present.
