Description
Southallbank Farmhouse is a timber-framed farmhouse, likely dating from the 17th century, possibly with earlier origins, and incorporating some 19th-century rebuilding. It is constructed with red-brick infill and has plain-tile roofs. A front lateral stack is made of squared stone with a brick flue. The farmhouse consists of a main range with a cross-wing to the right. The main range may have been extended to the left and forwards. It is two storeys and an attic, with a three-window front. The main range has two 2-light casement windows above the front door and a 3-light casement window. The first floor has square-panelled framing and was originally jettied, later underbuilt in the 19th century. Framing is visible on the left end where a 19th-century extension is present. To the right, the stack and roof are set back, with the stack fronted by a projecting lean-to that continues to the right in front of the cross-wing, which was refronted in 19th-century brick. The cross-wing has a 2-light casement window on its first floor and in the attic. There are two doors to the front of the lean-to, along with further casement windows on the cross-wing’s right end. The rear of the cross-wing features square framing, partly underbuilt in brick, and a 2-light attic casement. Massive purlins are visible at the front and rear of the building. The rear of the main range has two 2-light casement windows on the ground floor, which are underbuilt in the 19th century, and on the jettied first floor, there are two 1-light casement windows. The interior was not inspected but is noted to contain ceiling beams and framing.
