Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located in Stottesdon. The tower dates from the late 11th century and conceals an earlier west doorway featuring a remarkable lintel and tympanum, which may be from the early 11th century or possibly pre-Conquest. The north arcade was constructed around 1180, while the chancel and most of the rest of the church were built around 1330. The church features impressive 14th-century window tracery, particularly in the east wall of the chancel, and a small south window that contains fragments of medieval glass. A splendid, richly carved font from around 1160 is also present, along with a 17th-century pulpit. This church is regarded as one of the best in the area.
