Description

This barn, located about 60 metres east-north-east of the Church of St Mary, is probably from the early 13th century. It is timber-framed on a stone rubble plinth, clad in weatherboarding, and features a corrugated iron roof with rounded gable ends.

The barn has a surviving north-west end bay that includes both aisles. The rest of the barn to the south-east has been demolished and replaced with an open-fronted cattle shelter that runs at right angles to the original structure. The north-west elevation is the original gable end, which has a curved profile roof and is clad in weatherboarding. The south-east gable is similar but has exposed posts, a tie-beam, and braces above the later lean-to cattle shelter.

Inside, the surviving frame includes four jowled arcade posts and four aisle posts (with the north-west aisle post being a replacement), along with their braces and trenches for halved passing braces, of which two remain. There are also aisle and arcade plates, two large tie-beams, some studding, rails, and a storey-post in the north-west end wall. The sole-plates have largely been replaced, and part of the north-east aisle wall of the next bay survives as the side wall of the later cattle shelter. The roof above the tie-beams has been replaced.

Historically, the land was held by the Convent of St Mary's of Cormeilles at the time of the Domesday Survey and was later held by Sir Gerald de Eillesford from 1301 to 1336 before passing to the Convent of Wormsley. This barn is a rare and possibly unique example of an early medieval aisled barn in Herefordshire.
