Description
The White House is a late 16th-century farmhouse with 17th-century additions, further alterations, and a mid-19th-century refacing of the south front. Construction is timber-framed, with a sandstone plinth. The walls are a combination of wattle and daub, painted brick infill, sandstone rubble on the east addition, and red brick on the south side. The building has an irregular plan, comprising a hall and a cross-wing facing north, with a timber-framed addition to the west and a 19th-century stone addition extending northwards to the east. The main entrance is central to the former hall. A large axial stack features 19th-century brick shafts with a diagonal plan, along with a further stack to the west and east. Internally, the main room of the central block has a cross-beamed ceiling. The east wing has a gable end with a three-light casement window and a similar four-light window on the ground floor. The main block features a one- and two-light 20th-century window, and an entrance porch with two doors. A gable end to the cross-wing incorporates three-light casement windows, and a further three-light window is present on the ground floor of the west extension.
