Description

This is a late 17th-century farmhouse with an attached barn, located on Corkhill Lane, Normanton. The barn was built in 1765, as evidenced by brickwork on its east gable. Both the farmhouse and barn have been altered in the mid and late 20th century. The farmhouse is constructed of brick with diaper work on the north side and south gable, and has a pantile roof with coped gables and two gable and one ridge stack. It is a two-story, two-window range building arranged in an L-shape. The fenestration is irregular, mainly featuring 20th-century casement windows. The south front has a main block with one window to the right and a lower, two-story block with a smaller window to the left. A glazed porch covers a door to the left of the lower block, alongside a single-story wash house with a close-boarded door, and a single window to the right. A mid-20th-century lean-to porch is on the west side, alongside a single window. The south gable has a segmental-headed window on each floor, the upper one dating to the 18th century. The north side features scattered windows. The barn has cogged eaves and a central pair of altered 20th-century doors on its north side. Its east gable bears a brick inscription reading "A S 1765" and features two tiers of breathers. Inside the farmhouse, a 17th-century winder staircase with turned balusters and a moulded handrail is present, alongside two blocked winder stairs leading to attics. The roof structure comprises single and double purlin principal rafters, constructed from re-used timber, and includes part of a stud partition. Ground floor rooms feature chamfered span beams while the interior also has four-plank doors and two 18th-century panelled doors.
