Description
The K6 telephone kiosk in Epperstone is a Grade II listed structure designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott for the General Post Office. Made of cast iron and painted red, it features long horizontal glazing in the door and sides, with crowns applied to the top panels rather than perforated. The kiosk has rectangular white display signs reading "TELEPHONE" beneath its shallow-curved roof. While the internal equipment has been modernized, the kiosk remains intact with all its glass windows, although the red paintwork is in poor condition. It is situated at the village crossroads, opposite two Grade II listed buildings, 1 and 2 Den Cottages and the Old Forge, which enhances its group value.
The K6 is a significant example of 20th-century industrial design and represents a streamlined and cost-effective evolution from Scott's earlier K2 design of 1924. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, a prominent British architect, is known for other notable works, including the Anglican cathedral of Liverpool and Battersea power station. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced, and while many were replaced in the 1960s, many still stand as iconic features in British streetscapes. The K6 kiosk in Epperstone is recognized for its design and its visual relationship with nearby listed buildings.
