Description

Numbers 15, 17, and 19, along with adjoining outbuildings, are a house with cottages, dating primarily to the early and mid-17th century, with alterations from the 18th century and additions from the 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared rubble and brick, with some rendered and colourwashed areas, and incorporates timber framing. The roofs are steeply pitched, covered in pantile and concrete tiles. A rendered plinth runs along the base, and there are three gable stacks, one external, and a single ridge stack.

The building has a complex, irregular Z-plan and is two storeys plus a garret. The street front features a variety of shop fronts, doorways, and windows, including a blocked central door flanked by windows. Above the shop fronts are casements and Yorkshire sash windows. A flat-roofed addition with a door and shop window extends from the right-hand side. A flat-roofed porch with a re-set early 19th-century panelled door is positioned on the west end. An adjoining rubble boundary wall has a doorway and flat stone coping.

The west gable has two small blocked 17th-century openings, while a return angle features a 20th-century casement and squint. Further windows include a sash, casement, a large Yorkshire sash, and a blocked opening. The outbuildings to the west have a door on the north side and a series of casements and doors above. The east side features blocked openings, doorways, and windows. Above, there are two blocked stone mullioned casements, a smaller similar casement, a blocked opening, and a casement in a moulded ashlar reveal. The rear elevation incorporates blocked openings and casements.

The interior reveals remnants of an external rear wall stack, along with six jowled bay posts and moulded span beams. Notable features include chamfered span beams, some with ogee stops, an early 17th-century strutted principal rafter roof with single and double butt purlins, a mid-17th-century principal rafter roof with double purlins and collars, small plaster cornices, and a blocked stone mullioned leaded window. Number 19 contains a full-height panelled room from the early 18th century, with a panelled overmantel and a square ashlar fireplace with bolection moulding, containing an early 19th-century hob grate. Another mid-17th-century fireplace has chamfered ashlar and an early 19th-century hob grate. A door is made from 16th-century framed panelling, and there are four 17th-century two-panel doors, one 18th-century three-panel door, and a 19th-century stair with turned newels, stick balusters, and a ramped handrail. Number 15 has a winder stair and two late 18th-century panelled doors.
