Description
This is a terrace of six shops with residential accommodation above, built around 1878 for the Devonshire Estate. The upper floors have since been converted into a mixture of flats and offices. The building is constructed of squared and coursed Millstone Grit with ashlar sandstone dressings and a roof of Welsh slate, topped with stone chimney stacks.
The terrace comprises six matching properties of three storeys, with basements and attics, each spanning three window bays. Most of the ground-floor shopfronts have been replaced in the late 20th or early 21st century, with the exception of number 16, which retains a timber shopfront. This features two large shop windows above a stall riser, flanked by doorways with overlights, and a fascia board bearing the raised lettering "HARGREAVES & SONS.” Channelled pilasters topped with stone corbels are situated between each shopfront. The first, second, and attic floors of all properties have a uniform appearance. The first floor has tripartite ashlar windows with a pedimented entablature on consoles, containing three two-over-two sash windows, and a shallow ledge with a low, cast iron railing featuring floral motifs. An ashlar plat band runs across the façade at the level of the window surround cornices. The second floor mirrors this design, with three two-over-two sash windows within architraved ashlar surrounds and similar iron railings. Pitched roofs are punctuated by two dormers on each property, each with a two-over-two sash window within a pedimented ashlar surround. Original square section drainpipes are present on the ground floor, becoming circular above. The rear elevations were extensively redeveloped in the mid- to late 20th century, but where the original rear elevation remains visible, it displays a regular fenestration pattern of two two-over-two sash windows on each floor. The rear roof pitch has two gabled dormers, each with a two-over-two sash window.
The interior of number 16-18 is believed to retain original features, including an original wooden banister with a mahogany handrail running from the ground floor to the third floor. Original fireplaces are also present on the ground, first, and second floors. The ground floor fireplace has a hearth of stone flags; the first floor has two cast iron fireplaces, one with a Derbyshire Fossil Limestone surround and the other with a marble surround. Also on the first floor are understood to be large mahogany showcases dating from around 1910. The second floor features an original fireplace with wooden surrounds.
The terrace was formerly listed as 12-28 Spring Gardens.
