Description

11 New Street is a mid-18th century house constructed of red brick laid in Flemish bond, featuring brick dressings and a slate-clad roof. It is part of a row of terraced buildings facing west onto New Street and has a U-shaped plan, which includes the original main range and a rear north wing, with a south wing added in the mid-20th century.

The three-storey house has a symmetrical façade with a low plinth and a moulded wooden eaves cornice. It is three window bays wide, with splayed outer bays. The windows are eight-over-eight pane sash types set in moulded cases beneath cambered gauged brick arches, and the first-floor sills create a continuous band. The central bay features a stone Tuscan porch adorned with a panelled frieze and moulded cornice. The fanlight above the door has delicate wrought iron glazing bars arranged in an arch with fanned segments, while the six-panel door is not original.

Inside, the building has been converted into flats but retains some historic features. The front door opens into a small hall with red and green tiles, leading to a staircase with winders at the first turn, a closed string, and turned balusters supporting a moulded handrail. There are two plain wooden fireplace surrounds with blocked openings on the ground and second floors, along with a more elaborate mid-19th century stone fireplace featuring a semicircular arched opening and attached shafts to the jambs. Additionally, there is a simple fireplace of exposed wood with a chevron pattern on the frieze, likely from the early 20th century. A window in the rear range retains a pair of panelled shutters that operate on runners, and the brick vaulted cellar includes alcoves and storage shelves.
