Description
Myddleton Lodge, originally known as St Paul’s Retreat, is a large detached house dating back to the 16th century. It is constructed from squared, coursed stone with a stone slab roof. The north front has two storeys, a basement, and a gable storey, presenting a symmetrical facade of three windows. Above, a five-light window is positioned on each side of a five-light oriel. Below, a three-light window sits either side of a central doorway, which features a heavy rusticated arch of rounded stones and stone steps leading up to it, with 19th-century railings. All windows are characterised by splayed mullions and transoms. Two further three-light windows with splayed mullions under dripmoulds and round heads are set within the gables, which are topped with crocketed finials and flanked by corner chimneys. A turret projects from the west side of the main block, which remains practically unaltered. A 19th-century wing, built in a similar style, was added to the east, and a chapel, dating to circa 1830, extends from the west, incorporating lancet windows and wooden tracery. The building possesses group value.
