Description

The railings and gate piers located approximately 10 meters north-east of Number 26 (Castlegate House) in York date from the mid-18th century and are likely the work of John Carr. They consist of wrought-iron railings and gate piers set on a painted stone wall that is about 0.5 meters high. The wall is topped with square section railings and turned braced standards featuring twist finials. The gate piers are designed with openwork, showcasing panels of wavy and angled pieces, and are capped with clustered scrolls and urn finials.
