Description

Keadby Lock is a tidal canal lock and its abutments, built between 1793 and 1802 for the Stainforth and Keadby Canal. The lock features new gates and sills that were fitted in 1932, along with a concrete platform, a lock-keeper's hut, and sheet steel pilings added to the river front in the 1970s and 1980s. The lock basin is faced with ashlar stone, and the bridge abutments are also made of ashlar. It has timber lock gates with iron railings and is aligned east-west, with the River Trent located to the east. The lock includes a single basin with two alternating pairs of gates, with the outer flood gates reaching nearly 8 metres in height. On the north side of the lock wall, there is a depth gauge marked in Roman numerals next to the outer flood gates, and an inscription in the center of the north side notes the fitting of the new gates and sills in August 1932. To the west of the lock, there are abutments for a former swing road bridge, featuring curved recessed retaining walls on both the north and south sides, and a coped stone wall at the southern entrance with a wooden and iron barred gate. A 20th-century swing road bridge is located to the west, and the brick walls surrounding the lock are not included in the listing. The Stainforth and Keadby Canal was constructed to bypass the lower reaches of the River Don and was acquired by the South Yorkshire Railway Company, which opened a railway line along the north bank of the canal in 1859. The canal's terminus by Keadby Lock was replaced in 1864 when the railway line was rerouted to Keadby Bridge, located a mile to the south.
