Description
The ruins of the former gateway in the south precinct wall of Thornton Abbey, located approximately 180 metres south of Abbot's Lodge, date from the 14th to 15th century. The structure consists of two sections of walling that flank the entrance opposite a causeway across the moat. The eastern section stands about 3 metres high, measures approximately 2.5 metres wide from east to west, and is 1 metre thick. It features a core of chalk rubble with brick through-courses, a brick plinth, and a facing made of squared chalk, brick, and limestone ashlar. The western section, also around 3 metres high, is about 2 metres long from north to south and 1 metre thick. It survives as a mortared chalk rubble core with some brick on the eastern side.
