TA2710NE SIDEBOTTOM STREET, The Docks 699-1/7/141 (South East side) Fish processing and smoking factory (Keith Graham Ltd.)

GV II

Fish processing and smoking factory. Early C20, probably for GF Sleight, with later alterations. Yellow brick, with street fronts colourwashed and part rendered. Slate roof. PLAN/EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic. Fronts to Cross Street and Sidebottom Street. Both fronts gable facing, with 4 irregular first-floor openings; smoking tower on north side, rising to 4-storey height. Sidebottom Street front has part-rendered ground-floor with single C20 door to right of centre beneath lintel, and partly blocked window to left. First and second floors have doors in line to left of centre beneath lintels, the first-floor door with an 8-pane overlight, the second-floor door with a 2-fold board door. First floor has twin windows to right with glazing bars and continuous sill, and a smaller door to right, all beneath lintels. Second floor has twin windows in line with those below, with 4 panes and sill beneath a single segmental arch; small casement to far right, blocked segmental-arched window to far left. Narrow segmental-arched attic window with glazing bars; pair of iron tie-bar ends. Smoking tower, slightly set back from front, rises from left side of building, with plain walls and flat top with row of 5 large metal ventilator cowls. Cross Street front has segmental-arched entrance to left of centre with C20 door; single-light and 3-light window to right, wide C20 door to left. First floor has narrow window to left of centre flanked by single 3-light windows and a 2-light window to far right. Second floor has similar narrow single-light and flanking 3-light windows. Central narrow single-light window to gable. All windows with stone sills, moulded stretcher brick segmental arches and late C20 glazing. INTERIOR: not inspected. One of a series of small fish processing and smoking factories at Grimsby, dating from the period when Grimsby was one of the foremost fishing centres in the world. Formerly owned by the fishing magnate G.F. Sleight of Weelsby Hall, Weelsby Road (qv). The only surviving example with this particular design of smoking tower. Of additional interest as part of a close group of smoking-houses of various dates and designs in the square

bounded by Surtees St, Brown St and Sidebottom St (qv).
